Bills aim to spur job creation
STEWART AIRPORT — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., unwrapped a legislative package Tuesday to revitalize manufacturing and grow jobs in New York.
Gillibrand touted her Made in America Block Grant Program Act, as well as two bills — the Security in Energy and Manufacturing Act, and the New Markets Tax Credit Extension Act — that would provide tax credits for new plant construction and private investment in economically disadvantaged areas.
Goal: Retooling, retraining
After addressing more than a dozen business people and government officials at the Orange County Business Accelerator, Gillibrand said the aim was to include the measures in a larger jobs bill in the fall.
"Here in the Hudson Valley, more than 11,500 manufacturing jobs were lost from 2005 to 2010," Gillibrand said. Yet, she added, the state also saw gains in high-tech employment.
"I see so much potential for New York to lead in these emerging high-tech manufacturing sectors," she said.
Gillibrand's proposed Made in America grants would be available to small- to medium-sized companies to retool and retrain workers for such fields as alternative energy, computer technology, aerospace and biotechnology.
