Gillibrand backs trade zone
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is pressing U. S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to grant Genesee County status as a foreign trade zone.
Foreign trade zones, which benefit from relaxed taxes and tariffs, were developed to make international trade less expensive for United States-based companies in order to boost domestic business, investment and employment. Also called free ports, the zones are situated in or near U. S. Customs ports of entry.
In a letter to Locke, Gillibrand, D-N. Y., said the designation would attract new business to Genesee County while increasing exports and maintaining local employment.
