Gillibrand To Serve On Armed Services Committee, Following Hillary Clinton's Footsteps
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says she will serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee, filling a job once held by predecessor Hillary Clinton.
Gillibrand, recently elected to the seat she was appointed to in 2009 after Clinton left to become secretary of state, had sought the committee seat.
She has worked on military issues, such as the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for gay troops.
She had served on the House Armed Services Committee when she represented an Albany-area congressional district.
"One of the reasons I came to Congress was to strengthen our national security and serve as a voice for our troops and military families," she said.
Gillibrand says she will work for troops and their families, and try to strengthen connections between the military and New York's high-tech and manufacturing sectors.
New York is home to Fort Drum, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn.
