Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand pushes bid to bring manufacturing jobs back to NYC

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers have lost manufacturing jobs since 2005, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand hopes she can reverse that trend for the city's working-class residents.

In a new program called Make It In America, Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is pushing a slate of initiatives to breathe new life into New York's industrial hubs by promoting clean-tech and high-tech fields.

"Our manufacturers have been amongst those hit the hardest," Gillibrand said of the city's economy. "We want to create a more targeted investment strategy that will help create jobs."

The initiatives, unveiled Tuesday, include federal grants for retraining workers, retooling factories and hiring tech experts; tax credits for makers of clean-energy technology, and extending an existing tax credit program to lure private investors.
